When you buy a car diffuser, you usually ask two questions: "What does it smell like?" and "How long will it last?"
But there is a third question—perhaps the most important one—that rarely gets asked: "What is this liquid actually made of?"
At Coupe & Cologne, we believe luxury is about transparency. You care about the oil you put in your engine and the products you use on your paintwork. You should know exactly what you are hanging from your rearview mirror.
Here is the breakdown of what goes into every Coupe & Cologne diffuser.
1. The Soul: Premium Fragrance Oil
The first component is the scent itself. Unlike cheap air fresheners that use synthetic "flavors", we use cosmetic-grade fragrance oils.
These are complex, multi-layered perfumes inspired by the world’s most iconic designer fragrances. But fragrance oil on its own is too thick to travel up a reed and too concentrated to use undiluted. It needs a vehicle to carry it.
2. The Engine: The "Non-DG" Base
This is where the engineering happens. The "liquid" you see in the bottle is primarily a carrier fluid known in the industry as a Non-DG Diffuser Base.
"DG" stands for Dangerous Goods. Most standard air fresheners use volatile solvents or high-alcohol bases (Dangerous Goods) to get a massive scent throw quickly. We chose a different path.
Our Non-DG base is a chemically engineered carrier fluid selected for three specific reasons:
A. Heat Stability (The 88°C Rule)
The inside of an Australian car in summer is an extreme environment. Dashboard temperatures can easily climb above 60°C.
-
The Standard Way: Alcohol-based diffusers have a low "Flash Point" (often below 20°C). In a hot car, they become highly pressurized and evaporate rapidly.
-
The Coupe & Cologne Way: Our Non-DG base has a Flash Point of 88°C. This makes it incredibly stable. It doesn't panic in the heat; it simply sits there, doing its job safely.
B. The "Slow Burn" Viscosity
Have you ever bought a car scent that smelled strong for two days and then vanished? That’s because the base was too light.
Our Non-DG base is heavier and oilier. It is designed to bind with the fragrance oil and travel slowly up the wooden lid wicks. This "slow release" mechanism ensures that your 8ml bottle lasts for weeks, delivering a consistent background aroma rather than a headache-inducing burst.
C. Safety Profile
Because our base is classified as "Combustible" rather than highly "Flammable", it is safer to transport and safer to have in your vehicle. Unlike some odor-eliminating sprays which can be acidic and corrosive to metals, our diffuser base is a neutral carrier designed to be gentle on the environment it inhabits.
The Verdict
So, what is a Coupe & Cologne car diffuser made of?
It is a blend of designer-grade art (the fragrance) and heat-stable engineering (the base).
We don't use water (which breeds bacteria), and we don't use cheap alcohol (which burns off too fast). We use a formula built specifically for the unique, hot, and small environment of your car's cabin.
